About the project 'Weather Kolkata'

The project proposes to monitor rainfall at various locations of the city of Kolkata and surroundings, which may provide quick information on the state of possible inundation in the city. At some other locations, more weather parameters like temperature, humidity, barometric pressure are also being monitored as general information. In addition, the water level in the sumps of some the drainage and sewerage pumping stations are being monitored for providing an estimate of the water accumulating at these stations (especially during the monsoon rains), and how many pumps may need to be deployed to evacuate the bulk of the water. As may be known, the central portion of Kolkata – roughly the colonial developed region – is entirely sewered and both the domestic waste water as well as the runoff generated from cloudburst together is intercepted by this network and gets conveyed underground up to the pumping stations. Unless the water accumulating in the sumps at the stations are evacuated, there may be inundation of the streets due to a backflow in the sewer mains.
